Meet the Flock: The Sheep Behind the Cheese

Meet the Flock: The Sheep Behind the Cheese

Every great cheese has a story, and at Hidden Springs Creamery, that story begins with the sheep.

Before the milk, before the cheesemaking, before the aging process, there is the flock. These animals are at the heart of everything we do, and their care, comfort, and daily life directly shape the cheese that ends up on your table.

A Flock with Purpose

Our sheep are dairy animals, meaning they are raised specifically to produce milk for cheesemaking. Each ewe plays an important role in the rhythm of the farm.

They are not just part of the process, they are the foundation of it.

The quality of the milk they produce depends on their health, their environment, and the way they are cared for every single day.

Daily Life on the Farm

A typical day for the flock is simple and steady.

The sheep move between milking, grazing, and resting. They spend much of their time out on pasture, where they graze on grasses and plants across the hillsides. This natural movement and diet help keep them healthy and content.

Milking happens on a consistent schedule, usually twice a day. The routine is calm and familiar, which helps reduce stress and keeps the animals comfortable.

In between, the flock rests, explores, and interacts with one another.

Personality in the Pasture

Sheep have more personality than many people expect. Within the flock, there are leaders, followers, and plenty of curious individuals.

Some are bold and quick to approach, while others are more reserved and prefer to hang back. Over time, farmers come to recognize these personalities and the small differences between animals.

This connection builds trust, which is an important part of working with any dairy animal.

Care Comes First

Caring for the flock is a constant priority. Farmers monitor the sheep daily, making sure they have access to fresh water, nutritious feed, and comfortable shelter.

Health checks, clean bedding, and thoughtful handling all contribute to the well-being of the animals.

Healthy sheep produce better milk, and better milk creates better cheese.

The Connection to Cheese

It is easy to think of cheese as something that begins in the creamery, but it really starts much earlier.

The richness of sheep’s milk, the flavor it carries, and the way it performs in cheesemaking all come from the animals themselves. What the sheep eat, how they live, and how they are cared for all show up in the final product.

At Hidden Springs Creamery, every wheel of cheese is a reflection of the flock behind it.

More Than Just Milk

The sheep are more than producers, they are part of the story, the land, and the daily life of the farm.

When you enjoy sheep milk cheese, you are experiencing something that began on pasture, shaped by the animals and the care they receive.

That connection is what makes artisan cheese feel personal, and why the flock will always be at the center of what we do.
