How to Build a Cheese Board

A cheese board is one of the easiest ways to create something beautiful and delicious for guests. The best boards combine a few great cheeses with simple accompaniments like nuts, herbs, and bread. When arranged thoughtfully, even a small selection can feel abundant and inviting.

Here’s a simple way to build a cheese board that looks full, balanced, and ready to enjoy.

1. Start with the Cheeses

Choose 3–4 different cheeses with a mix of textures and flavors. Variety keeps the board interesting.

Good combinations might include:

  • A soft, creamy cheese (like Driftless or a brie-style cheese)

  • A semi-firm slicing cheese

  • A bold cheese like a blue

Slice some cheeses ahead of time like the thin slices shown on the cutting board in the photo so guests can easily grab a piece.

2. Add Crunch with Nuts

Small bowls or little piles of nuts add texture and fill space on the board.

In the image above you can see almonds, which are perfect for cheese boards because they bring a warm, slightly sweet crunch that pairs nicely with creamy cheeses.

Other great options include:

  • Walnuts

  • Pecans

  • Marcona almonds

3. Include Fresh Herbs

Fresh herbs make a board look vibrant and rustic.

The sprig of rosemary on the board in the photo is a perfect example. Herbs add color and a subtle aroma without overwhelming the cheese.

Try adding:

  • Rosemary

  • Thyme

  • Basil

Simply tuck small sprigs between cheeses and accompaniments.

4. Add Bread or Crackers

Every cheese board needs something to carry the cheese.

Good options include:

  • Toasted baguette slices

  • Rustic crackers

  • Crostini

Stack them in small piles so they are easy for guests to grab.

5. Leave Space for Spreads or Extras

A small bowl of something sweet or tangy balances the rich flavors of cheese.

Popular additions include:

  • Honey

  • Fruit preserves

  • Balsamic glaze

  • Fresh fruit

Even a small drizzle of honey over a soft cheese can completely change the flavor experience.

6. Arrange for a Natural Look

Start by placing the cheeses on the board first, then fill the empty spaces with nuts, herbs, and bread.

Let things overlap slightly and avoid making the board look too perfect. A slightly rustic look, like the wooden board in the image, makes everything feel relaxed and inviting.

Serving Tip

Take the cheeses out of the refrigerator 20–30 minutes before serving so their flavors and textures can fully develop.

A well-built cheese board doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few cheeses, a handful of nuts, fresh herbs, and good bread, you can create something that looks beautiful and tastes even better.
